Mountain Ultrarunner, Edmonton
Originally from Québec, I have been downhill skiing ever since I was 5 years old. But I stumbled upon mountain ultrarunning much later in life, when I moved to Edmonton in 2009.
I started running in 2008 after an ACL reconstruction surgery following a ski accident. I was living in Boston at the time; after watching the Boston marathon with fascination, my wife registered for a half-marathon, which inspired me to start running as well. I ran my first marathon in Ottawa in 2009; it was slow, it was painful, but crossing the finish line was one of the most powerful moments of my life. In 2012 I decided to go beyond marathon distance, and ran my first ultra trail races. I loved it! Since then I have run many more ultra races, and I’m always looking for new challenges!
I am passionate about mountains, and try to spend as much as time as possible in the Canadian Rockies, either mountain ultrarunning, backcountry skiing, ski mountaineering, scrambling, resort skiing, or what not. I love to share my passion with others (especially with my beautiful wife and two amazing kids!).
My passion for mountains is combined with a burning quest to understand the universe. As a mathematics professor at University of Alberta, I pursue research on the fascinating interface between mathematics and physics, trying to understand the fundamental laws of nature via string theory. Fundamental research is all about diving into the unknown and living a life outside the comfort zone, just as is mountain ultrarunning!
Projects and races for 2016:
My two main races for 2016 are Mont Blanc 50 miler in June and Fat Dog 120 mile in August. I will also probably run a few more races, such as Golden Ultra 55km in September, and shorter road and trail races. I am also planning a few mountain adventures, running and skiing, details to come!

My favourite bar ..
I fell in love with the FRUIT2 bars immediately. They are amazing. I use them for everything, from long ski mountaineering outings in the winter to ultra races and long scrambling outings in the summer. They are absolutely delicious, very portable, and they do not freeze at all in the winter. No need for gels anymore!
In fact they are so good that I have to be careful not to eat too many of them…Vince
